Why I Do an Annual Parasite Protocol (And Why You Should Too!)

You Might Find it Surprising:

Hey there! Let’s talk about something we usually don’t talk about at the dinner table—parasites. Yup, I said it. Parasites are a lot more common than you think, and the fact is, you could have them right now and not even know it. In fact, 1 in 3 people are carrying these tiny invaders, and they’re experts at flying under the radar. But your body always knows, and trust me, it’s trying to tell you! That’s why I do an annual parasite protocol, and after reading this, you just might want to as well. (note: If you prefer podcasts over blogs - TUNE IN HERE)

What’s the Deal with Parasites?

First things first—parasites aren’t just a problem you pick up while traveling to exotic places. They’re actually much closer to home. Swimming in lakes and rivers, gardening, eating local fruits and veggies, sushi lovers, and yes, even letting your dog lick your face (guilty—my Aussie, Luna, does it all the time!)—all of these activities can expose you to parasites.

The problem is, they don’t always cause obvious symptoms. Some people feel totally fine while harboring these freeloaders. Others experience anything from bloating, gas, and digestive distress to more surprising symptoms like fatigue, skin issues, brain fog, or even joint pain. That’s why I say parasites are sneaky—they can mimic other health issues, making them tricky to identify.

And did you know that when parasites are present, your body prioritizes fighting them over other issues like gut bacteria overgrowth, heavy metal toxicity, or even mold exposure? That’s why dealing with parasites first is so important when it comes to regaining your health.

The Common and Not-So-Common Signs of Parasites

Okay, so what should you look out for? Here are some common (and not-so-common) symptoms that could point to a parasitic infection:

  • Bloating, gas, constipation, or diarrhea

  • Unexplained weight changes (either gain or loss)

  • Chronic fatigue (even after a good night’s sleep)

  • Skin issues like rashes, itching, or acne

  • Brain fog or trouble concentrating

  • Teeth grinding (especially at night)

  • Schizophrenia (Yep - you read that right)

  • Joint pain or muscle aches

  • New food sensitivities that seem to pop up out of nowhere

Sound familiar? Even if just one or two of these symptoms ring a bell (oh, let’s add tinnitus to the list), it might be worth checking for parasites. After all, they’re way more common than we realize.

Why I Do a Parasite Cleanse Every Year

Now that we know parasites are lurking around in our everyday lives, let’s talk about why I do a cleanse annually. Here's why it’s a smart move:

  • I swim in lakes and rivers – Water sources like lakes and rivers are prime spots for parasites, especially after rain washes contaminants in.

  • I spend a lot of time in the garden – Parasites love the soil. Getting your hands dirty might be good for your soul, but not so much for your intestines!

  • I eat local produce and wild berries – While farm-to-table is fantastic, produce can carry parasites from the soil it’s grown in, even if it's organic.

  • I love sushi – Raw fish? It’s a no-brainer—sushi is delicious, but it’s also one of the most common ways to pick up parasites.

  • My dog Luna loves licking my face – I love my Aussie, but her kisses could be transferring more than just affection.

Each of these activities puts me at risk, so I make sure to cleanse every year to keep myself feeling my best.

Why Autumn and a Full Moon Are the Best Time to Start

If you’re ready to start a parasite protocol, autumn is the perfect time to do it! Fall is all about transition and renewal—it’s the season to support your body’s natural detoxification processes. Plus, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, fall is when our bodies are primed for a deep cleanse.

But here’s a little fun fact: parasites are more active around the full moon. Your serotonin levels spike during this time, which parasites are drawn to. This makes them easier to flush out, making the full moon an ideal time to start a cleanse.

How to Prepare: Start with a 7-Day Liver Detox

Before jumping into a parasite protocol, it’s a great idea to prepare your body with a 7-day functional medicine liver detox. Why? Because parasites thrive in a toxic environment. Clearing out toxins from your liver and digestive system beforehand makes your body a less attractive place for parasites to hide, and it ensures you get the best possible results from your cleanse.

You can grab the detox kit I use over at my shop on Love Energy Wellness. It’s simple to follow and gives your body the reset it needs before tackling parasites.

At-Home Parasite Testing: Know Before You Cleanse

Not sure if you even have parasites? No problem. At Love Energy Wellness, we offer an easy-to-use, at-home parasite stool test that takes the guesswork out of it. You send in a sample (don’t worry, it’s quick and painless), and you’ll get a clear answer on whether parasites are present. It’s a powerful tool that helps you take control of your health with precision. You can find the test here.

The Parasite Cleanse I Trust

When it’s time to do the actual cleanse, I go with the Para Support Protocol by Equilife. It’s super gentle but highly effective at eliminating parasites, and it comes with everything you need to complete the cleanse without any hassle. While I can’t directly link the supplements here due to FDA regulations (crazy, right?), you can find everything, including the Para Support and liver detox, in my shop at Love Energy Wellness.

Final Thoughts: Is It Time for Your Annual Parasite Cleanse?

If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms I mentioned, or if you’re swimming, gardening, eating sushi, or getting those slobbery dog kisses like me, it might be time to give your body a reset. Parasites are more common than we think, but they don’t have to take control of your health. With a simple cleanse and some preparation, you can support your body’s natural defenses and feel your best.

Is This One Hidden Health Culprit Sabotaging Your Business Success?

As a woman entrepreneur, you’re familiar with the pressures of managing a business, balancing personal life, and maintaining health. In the midst of this juggling act, an often-overlooked aspect of your health could be impacting your productivity and overall well-being: the Calcium Shell. Let's delve into what this means, its implications, and how an integrative health approach can help you achieve optimal health and business success. (Note: if you prefer podcasts over blogs, click here to tune in.)

What is a Calcium Shell?

A Calcium Shell occurs when calcium levels in the body exceed 170 parts per million, as identified through a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) test. This condition indicates soft tissue calcification, where calcium, instead of being utilized for bone and teeth health, is deposited in soft tissues such as joints, muscles, organs, and even the brain. This can be due to a lack of essential minerals like potassium, magnesium, and boron, which normally help keep calcium in the bones.

Imagine calcium buildup similar to stalactites and stalagmites in a cave or the deposits seen in hard water systems. In the body, this buildup can block certain functions, leading to various health issues and potentially affecting one's personality and emotional responses.

You Might Be Wondering: What Causes a Calcium Shell?

Several factors can contribute to the development of a Calcium Shell:

1. Copper Toxicity: Copper lowers potassium and raises calcium, driving it into soft tissues. This is a common cause of Calcium Shells.

2. Iodine Deficiency: Iodine helps decalcify calcium, so a deficiency can lead to calcium accumulation.

3. Emotional Trauma or Chronic Stress: High stress can cause calcium to build up around cells, acting as a barrier to emotional responses and stress management.

4. Overuse of Calcium Supplements: Excessive calcium intake, especially without adequate levels of potassium, magnesium, and boron, can lead to buildup.

5. Hard Drinking Water: Water with high mineral content can contribute to soft tissue calcification.

How to Spot Symptoms of a Calcium Shell

A Calcium Shell can manifest through various physical and emotional symptoms:

1. Physical Symptoms: Joint and muscle pain, cramps, spasms, twitches, arthritis, osteoporosis, bone spurs, and kidney stones. Calcium is a sharp mineral, and its buildup in soft tissues can cause significant discomfort and chronic pain.

2. Emotional Symptoms: Feelings of disconnection, apathy, and emotional numbness. People with a Calcium Shell may have difficulty connecting with their emotions, feeling flat or unresponsive to situations that previously elicited strong reactions.

The Impact on Your Business

As an entrepreneur, your health is directly linked to your business performance. Chronic health issues stemming from a Calcium Shell can lead to:

1. Decreased Productivity: Fatigue and pain can lower your ability to work efficiently.

2. Impaired Decision-Making: Cognitive issues and brain fog can affect your strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.

3. Increased Absenteeism: Frequent health-related absences can disrupt business operations and continuity.

A Proven Holistic Plan to Address the Calcium Shell

Addressing a Calcium Shell requires a multifaceted approach, integrating diet, lifestyle, and targeted supplementation. Here’s a comprehensive plan:

Step 1: Detailed Health Assessment

Begin with a precision at-home Minerals & Metals (HTMA) test to analyze your mineral levels and identify imbalances. This test provides a detailed overview of your body's mineral status, offering a roadmap for targeted interventions.

Step 2: Nutritional Therapy

1. Balanced Diet: Focus on whole foods, lean proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. Reduce processed foods, sugars, and excessive dairy products.

2. Magnesium-Rich Foods: Include leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains in your diet. Magnesium helps balance calcium levels and supports overall mineral metabolism.

3. Hydration: Drink at least eight glasses of clean, filtered water a day to support detoxification and overall health.

Step 3: Targeted Supplementation

Based on your HTMA results, an integrative health practitioner can recommend specific supplements:

1. Magnesium Supplements: To help balance calcium levels.

2. Adrenal Support: Adaptogens like ashwagandha and rhodiola can support adrenal health and reduce stress.

3. Vitamin D: To improve calcium utilization and bone health.

Step 4: Lifestyle Modifications

1. Stress Management: Incorporate mindfulness, meditation, and yoga into your daily routine. These practices help reduce cortisol levels and improve overall well-being.

2. Exercise: Engage in regular physical activity to support bone health, improve mood, and enhance cardiovascular function. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.

3. Sleep Hygiene: Prioritize good sleep hygiene to ensure you get 7-9 hours of restful sleep per night. Quality sleep is crucial for recovery and hormonal balance.

Can The Northern Lights Affect Our Brilliance and Energy?

Of Course You’re Interested In Optimizing Your Energy:

As entrepreneurs, we are constantly striving to maximize our energy levels to drive success in our ventures. Yet, amidst the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we often overlook the profound connection between our personal energy and the majestic phenomenon known as the Aurora Borealis. In this blog, we will delve into the mesmerizing dance of the auroras, explore their correlation with solar storms, and uncover how these cosmic events can impact our well-being and business endeavors. Moreover, we will discover how Integrative Health offers a unique perspective and solutions to navigate these influences, ultimately fostering resilience and success. (Note: if you prefer podcasts over blogs, click here to tune in.)

Understanding the Aurora Borealis:

The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, is a breathtaking display of colorful lights that illuminate the polar skies. This natural wonder occurs when charged particles from the sun, known as solar wind, interact with the Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere, creating luminous patterns of light. While it is commonly associated with the Arctic regions, the Aurora Australis also graces the skies of the Southern Hemisphere, albeit with less recognition.

Despite its association with polar regions, the Aurora Borealis can sometimes be visible at lower latitudes, offering glimpses of its beauty to those living closer to the equator. This occurrence is often attributed to solar storms, which occur when the sun releases bursts of energy in the form of solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). These solar disturbances can disrupt Earth's magnetic field and propel charged particles towards the poles, resulting in enhanced auroral displays even at lower latitudes.

The Impact of Solar Storms on Earth and Human Biology:

Solar storms not only mesmerize us with dazzling auroras but also exert tangible effects on our planet, particularly on power and communication systems. The influx of charged particles can induce geomagnetic storms, leading to fluctuations in the Earth's magnetic field. These fluctuations, in turn, can disrupt power grids, satellite communications, and navigation systems, posing significant challenges to modern infrastructure.

Beyond their impact on technology, solar storms also influence biological systems, including our own. Humans are bioelectromagnetic beings, with our bodies generating electromagnetic fields (EMFs) through processes such as brain activity (measured by EEG) and heart function (measured by EKG). As such, we are inherently connected to the electromagnetic environment of our planet, making us susceptible to its fluctuations.

Emerging research suggests that solar storms may affect how we think and feel, potentially exacerbating symptoms of stress, anxiety, and fatigue. Moreover, individuals may experience these effects differently, depending on factors such as their sensitivity to EMFs and overall health status. Unfortunately, conventional medicine often overlooks the root cause of such symptoms, attributing them solely to psychological or physiological factors without considering environmental influences.

Integrative Health: Navigating the Cosmic Influence on Well-being and Business:

In the face of cosmic influences like solar storms, Integrative Health offers a holistic approach to well-being that acknowledges the interconnectedness of mind, body, and environment. By embracing principles from both traditional and alternative medicine, Integrative Health empowers individuals to optimize their health and resilience amidst external stressors.

One of the key strategies in Integrative Health involves awareness and preparation. By monitoring solar activity through resources such as the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), individuals can anticipate potential disruptions and take proactive measures to mitigate their impact. This may include optimizing sleep patterns, practicing mindfulness techniques, and utilizing grounding techniques to balance bioelectromagnetic fields.

Moreover, Integrative Health emphasizes the importance of resilience-building practices that strengthen the body's ability to adapt to stressors.

Gut-Brain Synergy: Nurturing Autistic Children for Enhanced Vitality and Entrepreneurial Success

You may not have realized that:

In the dynamic landscape of entrepreneurship, success is often perceived through the lens of financial gain and market dominance. However, the journey of entrepreneurship is also deeply intertwined with personal well-being, especially when it comes to the health of our loved ones, including our children. For entrepreneurs navigating the challenges of raising a child with autism, understanding the intricate relationship between gut health and brain function becomes paramount. In this blog, we delve into the profound connection between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and gastrointestinal (GI) issues like leaky gut and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Moreover, we explore how embracing Integrative Health can offer a holistic solution, potentially transforming both personal and professional spheres. (Note: if you prefer podcasts over blogs, click here to tune in.)

The Gut-Brain Axis: Unveiling the Connection:

Recent scientific research has shed light on the profound influence of the gut microbiome on brain health and function, giving rise to the concept of the gut-brain axis. This bidirectional communication system between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system plays a pivotal role in regulating various physiological processes, including mood, cognition, and behavior.

In the context of autism, studies have consistently demonstrated a high prevalence of gastrointestinal issues among individuals on the spectrum. Research published in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition highlights that up to 70% of children with ASD experience GI symptoms, such as abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, and bloating [1]. Furthermore, evidence suggests a correlation between the severity of GI symptoms and the severity of autistic behaviors [2].

What exactly is Leaky Gut and Its Implications?:

Leaky gut, scientifically known as increased intestinal permeability, emerges as a central player in the gut-brain axis dysfunction observed in autism. This condition refers to the compromised integrity of the intestinal barrier, allowing harmful substances like toxins, undigested food particles, and bacteria to leak into the bloodstream. Consequently, this triggers systemic inflammation and immune dysregulation, exerting profound effects on neurological function and behavior.

Studies have documented elevated levels of inflammatory markers and impaired gut barrier function in individuals with autism [3]. Moreover, a meta-analysis published in JAMA Pediatrics found a significant association between gastrointestinal symptoms and leaky gut in children with ASD [4]. These findings underscore the critical role of addressing gut health in the management of autism spectrum disorder.

Understanding IBS as a Common Comorbidity:

Alongside leaky gut, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) frequently coexists with autism, exacerbating the burden on affected individuals and their families. IBS is characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, altered bowel habits, and visceral hypersensitivity, significantly impairing quality of life.

Research indicates a higher prevalence of IBS symptoms in children with autism compared to neurotypical peers [5]. The intricate interplay between gut dysbiosis, immune activation, and neuroinflammation contributes to the pathogenesis of both conditions, highlighting the interconnectedness of the gut-brain axis in health and disease.

There Are Consequences on Life and Business:

For entrepreneurs, the challenges associated with raising a child with autism are multifaceted, extending beyond the realms of personal life into the realm of business. The emotional toll of witnessing a loved one struggle with ASD and accompanying GI issues can impact productivity, decision-making, and overall well-being.

Moreover, entrepreneurs may face logistical challenges in balancing the demands of business ownership with caregiving responsibilities. The financial strain of accessing specialized therapies and interventions further compounds the stress, potentially hindering entrepreneurial success.

Children of business owners affected by autism often require additional support and resources to thrive, necessitating a proactive approach to addressing their unique needs. Failure to prioritize their health and well-being not only jeopardizes familial harmony but also undermines the long-term sustainability of the business venture.

Integrative Health: A Holistic Solution:

Amidst the complexities of managing autism and GI issues, Integrative Health emerges as a beacon of hope, offering a comprehensive approach that integrates conventional medicine with evidence-based natural therapies. At the forefront of Integrative Health lies the recognition of the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit, emphasizing personalized care and proactive disease prevention.

Central to the Integrative Health paradigm is the concept of functional medicine, which seeks to identify and address the root causes of illness rather than merely managing symptoms. Through advanced at-home functional lab testing, certified Level-2 Integrative Health Practitioners can gain insights into the unique biochemical imbalances and dysfunctions underlying ASD and GI disorders, guiding targeted interventions.

Modern Science catches up With Ancient Wisdom:

Integrative Health practitioners utilize a myriad of natural health protocols supported by rigorous scientific evidence to promote optimal gut health and neurological function in individuals with autism. These clinically proven natural health protocols encompass dietary modifications, nutritional supplementation, lifestyle interventions, stress management techniques, and mind-body therapies, some of which are based on 6000 year old Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

For instance, research published in Nutritional Neuroscience suggests that a gluten-free, casein-free (GFCF) diet may lead to improvements in autistic symptoms and GI problems by reducing inflammation and restoring gut integrity [6]. Similarly, supplementation with probiotics, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and digestive enzymes has shown promise in ameliorating GI symptoms and enhancing neurodevelopmental outcomes in children with ASD [7][8].

Harnessing the power of Integrative Health empowers entrepreneurs to take proactive steps towards optimizing their child's health and well-being, fostering a nurturing environment conducive to personal and professional growth. By addressing the underlying imbalances driving autism and GI issues, Integrative Health paves the way for resilience, vitality, and success.

Helping to Avoid Failure and Cultivate Success:

The journey of entrepreneurship is replete with challenges and uncertainties, yet it is also imbued with resilience, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. By embracing Integrative Health as a cornerstone of their family's wellness strategy, entrepreneurs can mitigate the impact of autism and GI issues on both personal and professional domains.

Moreover, prioritizing the health and happiness of their children instills invaluable lessons in empathy, compassion, and integrity, shaping future leaders poised to make a positive impact on the world. As entrepreneurs nurture their children's potential, they sow the seeds of success not only for their families but also for their businesses and communities.

Unlocking Entrepreneurial Potential: The Synergy of Mindset, Health, and Business Success

You May Not Have Realized it But…

As an Integrative Health (IH) practitioner and clinical hypnotist, I've had the privilege of working with numerous women entrepreneurs who, despite their achievements in business, struggle with their health. Time and again, I hear the same refrain: "I've tried everything." These words often echo a journey marked by frustration, exhaustion, and a sense of defeat. Yet, there's a transformative shift that occurs when these individuals embrace the Integrative Health mindset—a shift that not only revitalizes their health but also empowers them to excel in life and business.

In the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship, it's easy to neglect one's well-being amidst the demands of building and managing a business. The consequences of this neglect can be profound, affecting not only physical health but also mental clarity, emotional resilience, and overall productivity. Burnout, chronic stress, and health issues can quickly derail even the most promising ventures, leaving entrepreneurs feeling depleted and disillusioned. (Note: if you prefer podcasts over blogs, click here to tune in.)

As You Already Know, Mindset is a Key Factor to Success:

Carol S. Dweck's groundbreaking book, "Mindset: The New Psychology of Success," offers valuable insights into the power of mindset in shaping our lives. Dweck distinguishes between two fundamental mindsets: the fixed mindset and the growth mindset. Those with a fixed mindset believe that their abilities and traits are static, leading them to avoid challenges and view failures as personal shortcomings. In contrast, individuals with a growth mindset embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, persist in the face of setbacks, and believe in the power of effort to improve their abilities.

Are You Caught in The Mindset Trap?:

For many women entrepreneurs caught in the cycle of "trying everything," the fixed mindset can become a barrier to lasting change. They may approach their health challenges with a sense of resignation, believing that their circumstances are beyond their control. However, Integrative Health offers a unique solution—one that aligns perfectly with the principles of the growth mindset.

Integrative Health recognizes the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit, viewing health as a holistic expression of well-being. Rather than focusing solely on symptom management, IH addresses the underlying root causes of health imbalances, taking into account factors such as nutrition, stress, sleep, and emotional well-being. By embracing this comprehensive approach, women entrepreneurs can reclaim agency over their health and vitality.

Discover a Profound Shift In Perspective:

Central to the Integrative Health mindset is the recognition that true healing begins from within. Through practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and clinical hypnosis, individuals can tap into their innate capacity for self-healing and transformation.   Clinical hypnosis, in particular, offers a powerful tool for accessing the subconscious mind, where deeply ingrained patterns and beliefs reside. By reprogramming these subconscious scripts, individuals can break free from self-limiting beliefs and create new pathways for health and success.

But how does prioritizing health translate to success in business? The answer lies in the profound interplay between well-being and performance. When individuals are operating at their optimal level of health, they experience greater mental clarity, creativity, and resilience—qualities that are indispensable in the world of entrepreneurship. As resilient leaders, you've likely weathered the storm of the COVID-19 pandemic, adapting your businesses to thrive in the face of adversity. However, amidst the triumphs, many of you may be grappling with a silent adversary: post-viral anxiety.

Post-viral anxiety is a stealthy foe, often lingering long after the physical symptoms of illness have subsided. It can manifest as persistent worry, fear of the unknown, and an overwhelming sense of unease that threatens to derail your entrepreneurial journey. But fear not, for in this blog, we'll delve into the depths of post-viral anxiety, uncovering its hidden triggers, and unveil the empowering solution that integrative health offers to reclaim your mental well-being and propel you towards success. (Note: if you prefer podcasts over blogs, click here to tune in.)

Understanding Post-Viral Anxiety:

Picture this: you've battled through the fever, the cough, the fatigue of a viral illness like COVID-19. Physically, you've triumphed over the virus, but mentally, you find yourself trapped in a cycle of apprehension and uncertainty. This is the insidious nature of post-viral anxiety, a condition that affects not only your mental health but also your ability to function optimally in your entrepreneurial endeavors.

Post-viral anxiety can manifest in various forms:

1. Persistent Worry: You find yourself constantly fretting about the future of your business, the economic landscape, and the uncertainties that lie ahead.

2. Fear of Failure: Despite your past successes, you're plagued by self-doubt and a nagging fear of failure, hindering your decision-making and creative processes.

3. Physical Symptoms: Headaches, insomnia, gastrointestinal distress – your body may bear the physical manifestations of the stress and anxiety that accompany post-viral recovery.

4. Social Withdrawal: The isolation imposed by illness, compounded by lingering anxiety, may lead to withdrawal from social interactions, impacting both your personal and professional relationships.

The chaLLENGES of Post-Viral Anxiety:

As entrepreneurs, you're no strangers to adversity. However, the unique challenges posed by post-viral anxiety can be particularly debilitating, threatening to undermine your hard-earned successes and impede your journey towards your goals.

1. Productivity Plateaus: Despite your best efforts, you may find yourself struggling to maintain the same level of productivity and focus that once propelled your business forward.

2. Creative Blockages: The creative wellspring from which you draw inspiration may run dry in the face of anxiety, stifling innovation and hindering your ability to adapt to changing market dynamics.

3. Relationship Strain: The toll of post-viral anxiety isn't limited to your professional life – it can seep into your personal relationships, leading to strain and discord that further exacerbate your mental distress.

4. Health Impacts: The mind-body connection is undeniable, and the chronic stress associated with post-viral anxiety can take a toll on your physical health, compromising your overall well-being.

Unearthing the Root Causes:

To effectively combat post-viral anxiety, it's essential to dig deep and unearth the underlying root causes that fuel its insidious grip on your psyche. While the triggers may vary from individual to individual, some common culprits include:

1. Neurochemical Imbalance: The physiological impact of viral illness on the brain can disrupt neurotransmitter levels, contributing to mood disturbances and anxiety disorders.

2. Trauma Response: The experience of battling a serious illness like COVID-19 can evoke feelings of trauma, triggering a heightened stress response that persists long after the physical symptoms have resolved.

3. Psychosocial Factors: External stressors such as financial worries, social isolation, and the pressure to succeed in a competitive marketplace can exacerbate post-viral anxiety and impede recovery.

4. Inflammatory Pathways: Emerging research suggests a link between inflammation and mental health disorders, with chronic inflammation associated with both viral illness and anxiety-related conditions.

The Integrative Health Solution:

In the face of post-viral anxiety, conventional approaches often fall short, relying solely on pharmaceutical interventions or cognitive-behavioral therapy to manage symptoms. However, integrative health offers a holistic alternative that addresses the root causes of anxiety, empowering you to reclaim your mental well-being and thrive as a woman entrepreneur.

So, what exactly is integrative health, and how can it benefit you? At its core, integrative health combines the best of conventional medicine with evidence-based complementary therapies, embracing a whole-person approach that nurtures mind, body, and spirit.

Eliminating the Guesswork:

You might be wondering how to eliminate the guesswork. Introducing precision at-home functional lab testing to discover the underlying root causes marks a pivotal shift in personalized wellness within integrative health. Unlike traditional approaches that may generalize treatment, these tests delve into the intricate nuances of individual biochemistry, uncovering specific imbalances or deficiencies unique to each person. By embracing this innovative method, integrative health practitioners can tailor personalized wellness plans that precisely target the underlying causes of health concerns. Whether it's identifying nutrient deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, or toxic burdens, these tests empower individuals to take proactive steps towards optimizing their health and well-being. With the insights gained from these tests, individuals can make informed decisions about their health, paving the way for targeted interventions that address the root cause rather than just managing symptoms.

Wellbeing is an Equation:

Following the revelation of test results, the journey toward holistic well-being continues with a focus on the equation of removing toxicities and replacing deficiencies. Armed with a deeper understanding of their body's unique needs, individuals can embark on a journey of healing by eliminating environmental toxins, addressing nutrient deficiencies, and restoring balance to their biochemistry. Integrative health practitioners guide this process, leveraging evidence-based interventions to support detoxification pathways and replenish vital nutrients. Through targeted nutritional support, lifestyle modifications, and personalized supplementation, individuals can restore harmony within their body, fostering resilience to stress and promoting overall well-being. By addressing both the toxic burdens and nutritional deficiencies identified through precision testing, integrative health empowers individuals to take proactive control of their health, laying the foundation for a vibrant and fulfilling life.

Here's a deeper look at how integrative health can serve as your beacon of hope amidst the storm of post-viral anxiety:

1. Personalized Wellness Plans: Integrative health practitioners recognize that no two individuals are alike, tailoring wellness plans to address your bio-individual needs, preferences, and goals. Whether you prefer acupuncture, mindfulness, meditation, or nutritional counseling, integrative health offers a diverse toolkit of therapies to support your journey towards healing.

2. Mind-Body Integration: Unlike conventional medicine, which often compartmentalizes mental and physical health, integrative health recognizes the intimate connection between mind and body. Through practices such as yoga, Qigong, tai chi, hypnosis and breathwork, you'll learn to cultivate mindfulness and harness the power of your body's innate healing wisdom to combat anxiety and restore balance.

3. Nutritional Support: The gut-brain axis plays a pivotal role in mental health, and integrative health emphasizes the importance of nutrition in supporting optimal brain function. By fueling your body with nourishing foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and probiotics, you'll bolster your resilience to stress and promote emotional well-being from the inside out.

4. Stress Reduction Techniques: In today's fast-paced world, stress has become a ubiquitous presence, wreaking havoc on our mental and physical health. Integrative health equips you with practical tools and techniques to manage stress effectively, from mindfulness-based stress reduction to biofeedback and relaxation therapies.

5. Community and Support: As women entrepreneurs, the journey towards success can often feel lonely and isolating. Integrative health offers a supportive community of like-minded individuals who share your commitment to holistic well-being, providing a safe space to connect, share experiences, and draw strength from one another.

Together is Better:

The path to success is fraught with challenges, but with the right support and guidance, you have the power to avoid failure and overcome any obstacle that stands in your way. If you're struggling with post-viral anxiety or simply seeking to optimize your mental and emotional well-being, I invite you to take the first step towards transformation today.

Igniting Prosperity: How Smudging Fuels Entrepreneurial Spirit and Success

Naturally, You Want to Know About…

The Native American tradition of burning sage and sweet grass, known as smudging, has been a cornerstone of spiritual and ceremonial practices for centuries. This sacred ritual is believed to purify the mind, body, and spirit, as well as cleanse a space of negative energies. While the practice may seem mystical, recent scientific studies have shed light on the actual benefits of smudging. In this blog post, we'll delve into the history and significance of smudging, followed by an exploration of the science behind how burning sage can eliminate negative energies. (Note: if you prefer podcasts over blogs, click here to tune in.)

History and Significance of Smudging

Smudging is a ritual that dates back to pre-European contact, with various Native American tribes having their unique smudging practices. The most common plants used for smudging are sage, sweet grass, and cedar. Sage is believed to drive out negative energies, while sweet grass attracts positive energies. Cedar is often used to purify and protect.

Smudging is an essential part of many Native American ceremonies, including birth and death celebrations, weddings, and spiritual initiations. The ritual involves lighting the dried plants and allowing the smoke to fill the air. Participants often fan the smoke towards themselves or the space being cleansed.

In Native American culture, the abalone shell holds profound significance in the practice of smudging ceremonies. Revered as a sacred vessel, the abalone shell is believed to embody the energies of the ocean and the divine. Its iridescent beauty reflects the interconnectedness of all life and serves as a reminder of the harmony found in nature. When used in smudging rituals, the shell is seen as a conduit for carrying prayers to the heavens, purifying the space, and connecting with the spirits of the land. Its gentle, oceanic whispers echo the wisdom of the ancestors, guiding those who partake in the ceremony towards balance, healing, and spiritual renewal.

Science Behind Smudging

While smudging has long been associated with spiritual and mystical beliefs, recent studies have uncovered fascinating scientific explanations for its effectiveness.

Air Purification

One of the most significant discoveries is that burning sage releases negative ions into the air. These negative ions neutralize positive ions, which are emitted by electronic devices and can contribute to air pollution. By burning sage, the air is purified, and harmful particles are removed.

Antimicrobial Properties

Research has also shown that sage contains antimicrobial compounds that are released during burning. These compounds have been found to reduce airborne bacteria, viruses, and fungi. This means that smudging can literally cleanse the air of harmful pathogens!

Emotional and Psychological Benefits

Smudging has long been associated with emotional and psychological benefits, such as reducing stress and anxiety. Studies have shown that the aroma of sage can stimulate the brain's limbic system, promoting relaxation and calmness. Additionally, the ritualistic nature of smudging can create a sense of ceremony and mindfulness, which can be therapeutic in itself.

Your Key Takeaway

The Native American tradition of smudging has stood the test of time, and for good reason. Not only does the ritual hold deep spiritual significance, but science has also proven its effectiveness in purifying the air, reducing harmful pathogens, and promoting emotional wellbeing. By embracing this ancient practice, we can connect with the natural world, honor indigenous wisdom, and cultivate a healthier environment and mindset. So the next time you're feeling stressed or need to reset, consider lighting some sage and sweet grass, and let the healing smoke envelop you.

Conquering Invisible Battles: Triumph Over Chronic Fatigue and Long COVID

In the dynamic world of entrepreneurship,

where resilience and energy are crucial, chronic fatigue can be a formidable adversary. For women entrepreneurs, the challenge of balancing personal well-being with professional success is already demanding. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Medically known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), adds an additional layer of complexity, impacting both personal life and business endeavors. In this blog post, we will explore the various aspects of CFS, its potential misdiagnosis, the different stages it manifests, and how Integrative Health (IH) can provide holistic solutions to support women entrepreneurs on their journey to success. (Note: if you prefer podcasts over blogs, click here to tune in.)

Understanding Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a debilitating condition characterized by persistent, unexplained fatigue that doesn't improve with rest. Women entrepreneurs, already navigating the challenges of a competitive business environment, may find themselves grappling with the physical and mental toll of CFS. The symptoms extend beyond fatigue, encompassing sleep disturbances, cognitive difficulties, and muscle pain, creating a substantial hurdle in both personal and professional life.

Misdiagnosis and its Implications

CFS is notorious for being misdiagnosed or overlooked due to its overlapping symptoms with other conditions. In the entrepreneurial world, where time is a precious commodity, misdiagnosis can lead to prolonged suffering and hinder business growth. Although Integrative Health practitioners do not diagnose conditions, they do emphasize the importance of accurate information to tailor effective recommendations. A medically misdiagnosed case may result in unnecessary treatments that not only fail to address the root cause but may also exacerbate the condition.

The Different Stages of CFS

Understanding the often overlooked 7 stages of CFS is vital for implementing appropriate interventions. The condition typically progresses through Alarm, Resistance and Exhaustion stages, with the first two having a subset of initial, ongoing and chronic phases, each presenting unique challenges. In the early stages, entrepreneurs may dismiss symptoms as normal fatigue, attributing them to their hectic schedules. However, as CFS advances, it significantly impairs daily functioning, affecting cognitive abilities and overall productivity. Certified Integrative Health Practitioners recognize the importance of early discovery and action to prevent CFS from reaching severe stages.

As You’ll Discover, Integrative Health Offers Solutions for CFS

Integrative Health offers a holistic approach to addressing CFS, focusing on the interconnectedness of physical, mental, and emotional well-being. At Love Energy Wellness, we advocate for at-home functional lab testing as a powerful tool for uncovering underlying imbalances. These advanced tests provide personalized insights into nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, toxicities and other factors contributing to CFS.

Supplementation with NMN and d-Ribose: Clinical Success Stories

NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide) and d-Ribose have emerged as promising supplements in clinical practice for addressing CFS. NMN supports cellular energy production, combating fatigue at the molecular level. d-Ribose, a sugar molecule involved in ATP synthesis, enhances energy reserves. Clinical success stories highlight the positive impact of these supplements in restoring vitality and resilience in individuals suffering from CFS. Integrative Health practitioners at Love Energy Wellness guide entrepreneurs in incorporating specific supplements into their personalized wellness plans according to their lab results.

The Role of IH in Preventing Failure and Promoting Success

Entrepreneurial success is intrinsically linked to the well-being of individuals driving the business. Integrative Health plays a pivotal role in preventing failure by addressing the root causes of CFS, allowing women entrepreneurs to reclaim their energy and focus. Through personalized nutrition plans, stress management strategies, and targeted supplementation, IH empowers entrepreneurs to overcome CFS, fostering a resilient and thriving business environment.

There’s Hope and Empowerment through Integrative Health

Amid the challenges of CFS, Integrative Health offers hope and empowerment. Love Energy Wellness warmly invites women entrepreneurs to explore the possibilities of overcoming chronic fatigue through a complimentary health consultation. Energizing Entrepreneurship: Harnessing Integrative Health for Business Vitality and Longevity

I know that you’re concerned about your declining energy:

Welcome, ambitious women entrepreneurs, to a journey of revitalization and empowerment! At Love Energy Wellness, we understand the unique challenges you face, and today, we're diving into a topic that might just be the game-changer for your success – low energy due to diminished mitochondrial function.

Picture this: you wake up in the morning ready to conquer the day, only to find yourself drained and exhausted by mid-afternoon. You push through with willpower and caffeine, but that spark of energy you need to take your business to the next level seems elusive. Sound familiar? If so, you're not alone. Let's explore the common pain points you may be experiencing and discover how optimizing mitochondrial function can be the key to unlocking your full potential. (Note: if you prefer podcasts over blogs, click here to tune in.)

Just Because It’s Common Doesn’t Mean It’s Normal:

1. Fatigue and Muscle Weakness:

Ever felt like you're running on empty, both mentally and physically? Low ATP levels could be the culprit. ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, is the energy currency of your cells. When mitochondria aren't functioning optimally, your body struggles to produce enough ATP, leading to persistent fatigue and muscle weakness. Imagine the impact on your productivity and creativity as a woman entrepreneur.

2. Exercise Intolerance:

Your busy schedule demands physical resilience, but if you find yourself avoiding exercise due to constant fatigue or experiencing prolonged recovery periods, it's time to address the root cause. Optimal mitochondrial function is essential for efficiently converting nutrients into energy, ensuring you have the stamina to tackle both your business and personal life with vigor.

3. Neurological Symptoms:

Headaches, brain fog, memory loss and even seizures or strokes – these symptoms can be alarming and have a profound impact on your ability to lead and make critical decisions. Mitochondrial dysfunction is closely linked to these neurological challenges. By addressing and enhancing mitochondrial function, you may find improved cognitive function and mental clarity, enhancing your entrepreneurial acumen.

4. Heart and Respiratory Problems:

Cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, shortness of breath – these issues can affect your cardiovascular health and limit your ability to navigate the demands of entrepreneurship. Mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to these problems, and by optimizing mitochondrial health, you can promote heart and respiratory well-being, ensuring you're at your peak performance.

5. Gastrointestinal Issues:

Nausea, bloating, acid reflux, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome – these digestive challenges can be more than just a nuisance. They can interfere with your daily routine and hinder your ability to focus on growing your business. Mitochondrial function plays a role in gut health, and addressing this aspect could lead to improved digestive well-being.

6. Mood Disorders:

Anxiety and depression can be isolating, especially when you're juggling the responsibilities of entrepreneurship. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been linked to mood disorders, and by nurturing your energy at the cellular level, you may find greater emotional resilience and a more positive mindset.

7. Endocrine Abnormalities:

Diabetes mellitus and hypothyroidism can disrupt your hormonal balance, impacting your energy levels and overall well-being. Mitochondrial health is intricately connected to the endocrine system, and by addressing this connection, you may discover a renewed sense of vitality and balance.

The Integrative Health Solution:

Love Energy Wellness offers a unique and personalized approach to combat low mitochondrial function through integrative health practices. Here's just a few examples of how:

1. Stay Hydrated:

   - Drinking enough water supports detoxification and cellular function, reducing oxidative stress.

2. High Antioxidant Diet:

   - Incorporate foods rich in vitamin C like citrus fruits, vitamin E such as leafy greens, and beta-carotene as in root vegetables with an orange color to neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS).

3. Optimize Sleep:

   - Improve mitochondria through optimizing deep and REM sleep quality. Stop eating 3 hours before bed, avoid screentime 2 hours before sleeping and try 3 minutes of resonance breathing just before sleep to improve heart rate variability.

4. Toxin Removal:

   - Avoid toxins, consider our functional medicine detox protocol, limit toxin exposure including processed foods, alcohol and smoking to reduce oxidative stress.

5. Mind-Body Practices:

   - Engage in yoga, Tai Chi, and Qigong for their proven benefits on physiological function, including mitochondrial health.

6. Caloric Restriction and Intermittent Fasting:

   - Enhance mitochondrial function while supporting redox balance. Keeping a 10% caloric deficit and implementing a daily 12-14 hour overnight fast from 6pm to 6 or 8am can improve mitochondrial function.

7. Heat Therapy:

   - From a simple hot bath to an advanced Infrared sauna have been shown to induce heat shock proteins, protecting cells, including mitochondria, from stress-related damage.

8. Hormone Balancing:

   - Ensure balanced hormone levels, especially thyroid hormone, to support metabolic rate and energy production. Unlike conventional bloodwork, our advanced at-home functional medicine lab tests can pinpoint hormone imbalances with a simple saliva sample.

These 8 suggestions are just a sample of the clinically proven High Performance Health protocols we offer at Love Energy Wellness, that can revitalize your energy and performance, and set you up for a long healthy future!

Conclusion:

As entrepreneurs, your energy is your most valuable asset. Don't let low energy due to mitochondrial dysfunction hold you back. At Love Energy Wellness, we're committed to helping you renew the youthful potential of your cellular power. Stay tuned for our next blog post, where we'll delve into actionable strategies and lifestyle changes to optimize your mitochondrial function and propel your entrepreneurial journey to new heights. Illuminating the Path to Happiness: The Transformative Impact of Red Light Therapy on Wellness and Cognitive Health

In the hustle and bustle of modern life,

stress and anxiety have become unwelcome companions for many. The incessant demands of work, family, and social responsibilities often leave us feeling drained, both mentally and emotionally. But what if there was a simple, natural solution to brighten our days and enhance our overall well-being? Enter red-light therapy (RLT), a beacon of hope in the realm of integrative health that not only illuminates our surroundings but promises to light up the pathways to happiness by influencing serotonin levels in the brain. (Note: if you prefer podcasts over blogs, click here to tune in.)

Understanding Red-Light Therapy:

Before we delve into the profound effects of RLT on brain function and serotonin, let's shed some light on the different types of red light and their unique benefits. RLT utilizes low-level wavelengths of red light, typically in the range of 630-660 nanometers, to penetrate the skin and stimulate cellular activity. This therapy can be delivered through various devices, including LEDs, lasers, and lamps.

Types of Red Light and Their Benefits:

1. Red Light (630-700 nm):

   - Boosts circulation and promotes wound healing.

   - Enhances skin health and collagen production.

2. Near-Infrared Light (700-1100 nm):

   - Penetrates deeper into tissues, aiding muscle recovery.

   - Supports joint health and reduces inflammation.

The Illuminating Effects on Brain Function:

Numerous studies have highlighted the remarkable impact of RLT on brain function. A study published in the "Journal of Psychopharmacology" found that exposure to red light led to increased cerebral oxygenation and improved cognitive function in healthy young adults (Dawson et al., 2018). This increased oxygenation may contribute to enhanced serotonin production, crucial for regulating mood and happiness.

Elevating Serotonin Levels and Boosting Mood:

Serotonin, often referred to as the "feel-good" neurotransmitter, plays a pivotal role in regulating mood and emotional well-being. Research suggests that RLT can stimulate the production of serotonin in the brain, potentially alleviating symptoms of depression and anxiety (Aimbire et al., 2018). The therapeutic effects of red light extend beyond mere illumination, offering a holistic approach to mental health.

Guarding Against Neurodegenerative Diseases:

As we age, the risk of neurodegenerative diseases looms large. The neuroprotective properties of RLT have been explored in research, indicating its potential to mitigate the progression of conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease (Purushothuman et al., 2013). The ability of red light to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain provides a promising avenue for preventive healthcare.

Implementing Red-Light Therapy for Optimal Results:

To harness the benefits of RLT and brighten the pathways to happiness, consider the following suggestions:

1. Choose the Right Device:

Select a high-quality RLT device with the appropriate wavelengths for optimal results.

2. Consistency is Key:

Incorporate RLT into your routine consistently, preferably on a daily basis, to maintain its positive effects.

3. Duration and Distance:

Follow the recommended duration and distance guidelines for your chosen device to ensure safe and effective therapy.

4. Combine with Healthy Lifestyle Choices:

Complement RLT with a balanced diet, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep to maximize its impact on overall well-being.

Don’t Guess, Test!

It is also advisable to monitor neurotransmitter levels through precision at-home functional medicine lab testing to ensure that serotonin levels are within the optimal range. By doing so, individuals can track the therapy's effectiveness and, along with their Integrative Health Coach, make informed decisions about their health regimen.

Avoiding Pitfalls and Achieving Success:

To avoid disappointment and maximize the benefits of RLT, it's crucial to adhere to the recommended guidelines and stay committed to your routine. Consistency is the key to success, and integrating red-light therapy into your holistic health plan can lead to a brighter, happier you.

In conclusion, the radiant effects of red-light therapy on brain function and serotonin levels offer a beacon of hope in the pursuit of happiness. As we illuminate our way through the realm of integrative health, the gentle glow of red light may just be the missing piece to brightening our days and enhancing our overall well-being. So, why not let the warm embrace of red light be your guide on the journey to a happier, healthier life?

Tackling the Holiday Stress Epidemic: The Entrepreneur's Guide to Surviving the Season with Science and Self-care

As You Already Know…

The holiday season is often hailed as a time of joy, celebration, and connection. However, for solo digital entrepreneurs, the festive period can bring unique stressors that impact both their personal and professional lives. In this blog post, we'll explore the biology behind stress and the Holiday Perseverance Agenda (HPA) axis in layman's terms. We'll also delve into a functional medicine approach, incorporating science-backed supplements to buffer against stress. Additionally, we'll highlight lifestyle adjustments that can be instrumental in maintaining well-being during these demanding times. (Note: if you prefer podcasts over blogs, click here to tune in.)

Understanding the HPA Axis:

The HPA axis, can be considered your “Holiday Perseverance Agenda”, is a system in our body that plays a crucial role in how we respond to stress. Think of it as your internal stress management team. The HPA axis involves the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and adrenal glands working in harmony.

1. Hypothalamus: This brain region senses stress and triggers the release of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH).

2. Pituitary Gland: CRH signals the pituitary gland to release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH).

3. Adrenal Glands: ACTH prompts the adrenal glands to release cortisol and adrenaline, the body's primary stress hormones.

During the holidays, the HPA axis can go into overdrive, leading to increased cortisol levels and heightened stress responses. This can be particularly challenging for solo digital entrepreneurs juggling multiple responsibilities. So what can we do about it?

Functional Medicine Grade Supplements can buffer stress:

1. Activated B Vitamins:

   - *Function:* B vitamins play a crucial role in energy metabolism and neurotransmitter synthesis. Activated functional grade B vitamins are more effective than common vitamins because they are in a bioavailable form that the body can readily use, bypassing the need for conversion by the liver. This ensures higher absorption and utilization of the vitamins, resulting in enhanced therapeutic benefits and overall efficacy.

   - *How it helps:* Activated B vitamins, like methylcobalamin (B12) and 5-MTHF (folate), support the nervous system and help regulate mood, reducing the impact of stress.

2. Full Spectrum Magnesium:

   - *Function:* Magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body, including relaxation of muscles and regulation of stress hormones. Full-spectrum functional grade magnesium is considered more effective than common magnesium supplements because it contains a broader array of magnesium compounds, allowing for better absorption and utilization by the body. This comprehensive approach ensures a synergistic effect of various magnesium forms, enhancing overall bioavailability and therapeutic benefits.

   - *How it helps:* A full-spectrum magnesium supplement can ease muscle tension and promote a sense of calm, counteracting the physical manifestations of stress.

3. Ashwagandha:

   - *Function:* An adaptogenic herb, ashwagandha helps the body adapt to stress and maintain balance. Ashwagandha root extract when given to subjects with chronic stress problems, showed improved resistance to stress after 60 days of supplementation and a self-reported increase in quality of life.

   - *How it helps:* Ashwagandha can mitigate the effects of chronic stress, promoting a more resilient response to challenges.

4. Melatonin:

   - *Function:* Getting a good night's sleep can be difficult. Melatonin is a hormone produced in the pineal gland that helps to regulate the body’s natural circadian rhythm (sleep wake cycle). Supplementing with Melatonin Liquid is a popular method of regulating sleep by counteracting many possible sleep disrupting factors of a stressful lifestyle. Melatonin Liquid can help improve sleep efficiency, so you wake up feeling more rested and ready to start the day.

   - *How it helps:* During stressful times, sleep can be compromised. Melatonin supplementation can aid in achieving restful sleep, essential for overall well-being.

4 quick Lifestyle Adjustments:

The Gut and Brain Connection

If you've ever felt a nervous churning in your stomach that isn't a result of your lunch, then you are familiar with the close relationship that exists between our gut and brain. As we learn more about this connection, it's apparent that the impact goes far beyond a feeling of butterflies.

This has been clearly shown in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), who are much more likely to experience psychological factors including anxiety and depression. While we used to think this connection was simply based on a person's symptoms reducing their quality of life, it appears that the health of our gut may be the reason behind the mood disorders instead of the other way around. By targeting gut health, studies have shown both the successful reduction of IBS symptoms and significant improvement in moods.

An unhealthy gut can interrupt healthy hormone signals that impact mood, cognition, stress resilience and even hunger levels. Let's take a closer look at how this happens and what you can do about it.

How Does Our Gut Affect Our Health?

Your gut is home to billions of microorganisms collectively known as your gut microbiome. They perform many vital roles in the body, including the break down of indigestible fibers during digestion and supporting nutrient absorption. In addition to this, your microbiome can impact the overall health of your entire body — from immune health to metabolic health and cognitive function.

The most important factors that influence gut health are bacterial diversity and richness — or the numbers and types of bacteria present. When the balance of these microorganisms is thrown off, called dysbiosis,it can significantly impact your health.

An imbalance in gut bacteria -- dysbiosis can be caused by several factors, including:

  • Nutrition

  • Infections

  • Medication (antibiotics and NSAIDs)

  • Stress

  • Environmental toxins found in pesticides, chemicals in tap water, skin/household products and many other toxins we are exposed to that accumulate in our body

How Does Dysbiosis Influence Brain Health?

The direct connection between the gut and the brain is known as the gut-brain axis. The vagus nerve, a large sensory nerve, helps send messages from your gut to your brain and vice versa. It is via this super-highway that our microbiome can directly communicate with our nervous system.

Gut bacteria can influence hormones and neurotransmitters that affect our mood and appetite via the vagus nerve. They can even activate and send messages that influence mood on their own by producing specific bacterial metabolites. Studies have shown that people with depression have less diversity and richness in their gut. There are even interesting animal studies that have shown rats who display symptoms of anxiety become calmer after receiving fecal transplants from calm rats.

It is also known that up to 95% of feel-good neurotransmitterserotonin is made in our gut, and alterations in microbiome can directly impact its production. This key hormone impacts the entire body, it helps with digestion and eating behaviours, but is also a key mood stabilizer that affects feelings of happiness and well-being and is often used as a therapeutic target in medications for depression and anxiety.

An imbalance in the gut can lead to an increase in symptoms of anxiety, depression and brain fog. So what can you do?

Supporting the Gut-Brain Axis

Luckily what's good for your brain and gut is good for the rest of your body.

While more severe cases of dysbiosis may need a more targeted solution, here are five actionable steps you can take to support your gut-brain axis:

  1. Eat healthy fats, especially those rich in omega-3 fatty acids with EPA and DHA to support brain health, nourish the gut and balance healthy levels of inflammation. Oily fish, such as salmon or mackerel, are a great source. Aim for 5 ounces three to four times a week.

  2. Eat a nutrient-dense diet with a focus on eating the rainbow of brightly colored fruits and vegetables like berries. A powerful source of anti-oxidants, which support brain and gut health by combating free radical damage and increasing blood flow to the brain. Perfect to add to a breakfast smoothie.

  3. Consider probiotics either from food that contain live micro-organisms (fermented foods are a great source) or appropriate supplementation to boost bacterial diversity and repopulate the gut. It is important to note that any bacterial overgrowth would need to be addressed first before introducing probiotics.

  4. Manage stress levels, as high cortisol is linked both to an unhealthy gut and increased levels of brain inflammation. Calming activities including yoga, breath work and meditation have been shown to help reduce stress levels.

  5. Get adequate rest, as sleep promotes optimal repair and regeneration overnight. Altered circadian rhythms can also negatively impact our gut microbiome and consistently getting 7-9 hours of sleep will have widespread benefits on overall health.

Our overall health relies on the intricate connection of every system in our body. If one system is out of balance, it has a domino affect that can lead to one issue after another. Understanding the gut and brain connection, while nourishing your microbiome through diet and lifestyle factors will promote looking and feeling your best - mind and body. Happy Hormones: What Are They and How Do They Regulate Mood?

Hormones are our body's chemical messengers that regulate key functions including metabolism, reproduction, sleep, energy levels, libido, and growth and development. Hormones are also in charge of mood, producing our body's so-called "happy hormones." Serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin and endorphins impact how we feel from day to day and can stimulate positive feelings like happiness, pleasure, and love. Our body produces endorphins to help reduce stress, relieve pain and improve our mood.

Understanding how these hormones work is key since research has linked happiness and a positive outlook to numerous physical health benefits; finding that happy, optimistic people tend to have a longer life-span and increased longevity.

The 4 Happy Hormones

When we feel happiness or joy, four main chemicals in our brain are at play:

Serotonin

Serotonin is made in the center of the brain stem and largely responsible for boosting our mood. It acts on various parts of the brain, including areas that affect memory, fear, sleep, digestion and the stress response, as well as happiness and mood. Appropriate serotonin levels can help to balance mood, while low levels can contribute to a lowered mood state.

Dopamine

Known as the "feel-good" hormone, dopamine is made in an area at the base of the brain and plays a role in many functions including movement, heart rate, sleep, and our response to pain. It's largely associated with pleasurable sensations, where our brain releases dopamine when we're expecting a reward or something pleasurable. Even just thinking about a certain activity you enjoy can raise dopamine levels, which is why you continue to reinforce the pattern that brings these good feelings, like going back for another one (or more) of those freshly baked cookies or second helping of food. The intense feeling of reward is also what can trigger addictive behavioral traits.

Oxytocin

This hormone made in the hypothalamus and released into the bloodstream by the pituitary gland is often called the "love hormone." It's an essential hormone for childbirth, successful breastfeeding, and parents bonding with their children. Levels of this hormone typically rise with physical contact like kissing or cuddling.

Endorphins

Endorphins are the body's natural painkiller. They're released by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland when we feel stress or discomfort, generating feelings of well-being. There are about 20 different types of endorphins. The most common one is beta-endorphin, which is linked with a "runner's high." Endorphins rise when we eat a great meal, exercise, laugh, or fall in love.

These hormones produced in the brain are also closely linked to the gut. For example, more than 90% of the feel-good neurotransmitter serotonin is made in our gut, and changes in the microbiome have been shown to directly impact its production affecting how we feel.

Often, imbalances in our happy hormones can lead to lowered mood, energy, sleep irregularities and feeling down. There are plenty of ways, however, to help boost our happy hormones.

3 Steps To Elevate Your Happy Hormones

You can boost these hormones naturally through diet and lifestyle changes that can have a positive domino effect on your overall health and well-being.

1. Focus on Hormone-Healthy Foods

Nutrient deficiencies are sometimes linked to low mood, so making sure you're getting all the nutrients you need in your diet is essential. Certain foods can function as precursors for healthy hormone production.

Consuming specific foods trigger hormone production directly:

  • Dopamine is made from the amino acid tyrosine, which can be found in chicken, avocados, bananas, pumpkin and sesame seeds.

  • Endorphins are linked to spicy foods. When we consume the chemical in spicy foods, capsaicin, our body interprets the sensation as pain, which triggers the release of endorphins.

  • Serotonin's precursor is the essential amino acid tryptophan. You can get tryptophan from complex carbohydrates, including vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains.

  • Probiotics can also help promote an overall healthier gut, found in fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi and the drink kefir.

2. Consider Key Lifestyle Changes

Small changes to your day-to-day routine can also make a big difference when it comes to healthy hormone production and your mood. Lifestyle changes might include:

  • Incorporating meditation or acupuncture: There's evidence that the brain releases more dopamine when we're meditating. Acupuncture can also help to release more endorphins.

  • Exercising: Exercise and movement stimulate the release of serotonin. Go for a bike ride, lift weights, or enjoy a long walk.

  • Getting some sun: Being exposed to bright light or sun can help naturally raise serotonin levels. Sit outside for 10–15 minutes a day if you can.

  • Finding joy: Pick up a new hobby, connect with friends and family, watch a comedy show and laugh out loud, play music, sing or dance. Laughter can raise endorphins and also change levels of dopamine and serotonin.

3. Supportive Supplementation and At-home Lab Testing

In addition to a healthy, well-balanced diet, nutritional supplementation can be used to help support our mood. Deficiencies in key vitamins like vitamin B6 - needed to produce the happy neurotransmitter, could be the reason why you are experiencing low mood or greater symptoms of PMS. Restoring nutrient deficiencies and eliminating accumulated toxicities is a helpful way to rebalance the body and support your overall hormone function.

Understanding your current hormone levels can help you to identify and address any underlying imbalances that may be contributing to a low mood. A simple at home lab test can provide valuable insight into your neurotransmitter levels and wth this information your can work alongside an integrative health coach to establish the diet and lifestyle changes that best support you. Working alongside a certified Health Coach, armed with your individual test results you'll get an appropriate diet, lifestyle and nutritional supplementation plan to rebalance your hormones, mind and body.

Dopamine is a crucial neurotransmitter that controls the reward and pleasure center of the brain and if your body is not making enough it can lead to low mood, low energy, poor circulation and increased sugar cravings. Food and Mental Health: 5 Small Steps to Get Back on Track

If you find yourself in a mental rut and feeling particularly stressed or anxious, you might gravitate toward sugary, salty or fatty foods. But this so-called pattern of "comfort eating" can make us feel even worse, wherein we continue to eat poorly to offset those feelings and create a vicious cycle.

There is a growing body of evidence on the connection between food and mental health: What you eat can affect your mood. What is great is that with some simple daily changes, you can break this cycle and improve your mood and how you feel.

The Gut-Brain Connection

Your digestive tract has a direct line of communication with your brain and plays a considerable role in your overall emotional well being.

Your gut contains trillions of organisms, including yeast and bacteria, that constitute its microbiome. An imbalance in the gut microbiome can contribute to mood changes, according to Frontiers in Genetics. In addition, over 90 percent of your body's serotonin production happens in the gut thanks to bacteria. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps your body regulate mood. It also affects your eating habits, potentially putting you in a positive or negative eating pattern, according to Frontiers in Psychology.

Eating a healthy and balanced diet helps your gut function optimally and can ensure that it is sending the proper signals to the rest of your body.

5 Ways to Get Back on Track

It's not always easy to stop the cycle of turning to food when stressed. The good news? You can always get back on track. You can ease your way into healthier habits by taking small steps. Here are five simple ways to start:

1. Eat more fresh produce: Eating more fruits and vegetables could be the key to improving your mood. Research in the American Journal of Public Health found that getting eight servings of fruits and vegetables a day had a positive impact on mood. If you find this challenging, incorporating a smoothie is great way to boost your intake. Use fresh or frozen fruit, or simply add a scoop of our Daily Fruit and Vegetable Blend. To create a balanced meal with even more nutritional value, include a scoop of our Daily Nutritional Support powder, which contains 15g of protein as well as your daily dose of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, electrolytes and detoxification support.

2. Hold the sugar. When you're sad, stressed or frustrated, you might crave rich, sugary foods. But Harvard Health finds that eating a lot of refined sugar can worsen your mood. Opt for a square or two of dark chocolate, some fruit or try one of our Whole Food Bars instead.

3. Cook dinner at home. Meals at a restaurant often tend to be larger in portions and have higher quantities of salt and sugar. Preparing your meals at home is a great way to know what ingredients are going into your food and how much you are eating. It can also save you money too. If you're someone who frequently eats out, start by cooking just one or two additional meals per week. If you're short on time, create a meal plan and take an hour or two once a week to prep ingredients.

4. Take a probiotic. Your gut bacteria can play a significant role in your mental and emotional health. Taking a probiotic supplement can help maintain the diverse range of bacteria to support your optimal gut environment. There is increasing research and findings that a healthy gut may improve mood and support your mental health, according to Annals of General Psychiatry.

5. Follow a Mediterranean diet. A wide variety and color of fresh produce, fish, healthy fats, lean meat and gluten-free wholegrains may constitute the best diet for your mental health, suggests Harvard Health. Omega-3s from wild fish, pasture raised eggs and grass fed meat, fiber from fruits and vegetables, and reduced sugar can all contribute to better health and a more balanced mood overall.

We cannot ignore the connection between food and mental health as more and more research points to the significant gut-brain connection. Take small steps to reduce consumption of processed foods and start to incorporate healthier choices. Good food translates into a good mood. Your mind and body will thank you. (Blog source)
